WARNER –Connors State closed out its four game series with Ellsworth, Iowa, Saturday at Biff Thompson Field with a split in a double header, losing the first game 8-1 and taking the nightcap 8-3. Cowboys took the three game series 3-1.
Cowboys are now 13-3 and will travel to Texas on Tuesday to play a doubleheader in Dallas against North Lakes College.
Victor Vazquez took the loss in the opener lasting only 2/3 of an inning with Ellsworth jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Ellsworth added four more in the second for a 7-0 lead before Connors scored in the seventh to make it 7-1.
John Garcia relieved Vazquez in the first going four innings. Vazquez took the loss (1-1) as the Cowboys managed only four base hits.
In the second game the Cowboys trailed 2-0 until the fifth inning when Yariel Gonzalez connected on a solo homer over the center field wall, followed by Jarrard Poteete’s double. Poteete then scored on Tyler Fourkiller’s double to tie the game.
Connors took the lead in the sixth with the bases loaded. Poteete singled and an error to clear the bases.
Yamil Rivera started for the Cowboys going five innings, struck out five, allowing two earned runs, before Justin Ferrell came in relief in the sixth to get the win, his first. Ferrell went four innings, striking out six, giving up one hit.
In the hitting department Gonzalez finished with two hits and two RBIs, and Poteete had three hits and three RBIs.
