WARNER – Connors State College received the No. 1 seed in the Region II Baseball Tournament which opens play Thursday at Hinch Field at Jenks High School.
The No.9 ranked Cowboys (44-11) will play No. 6 Rose State (15-30) at 7 p.m. Thursday. Northeastern A&M (36-15), the No. 2 seed, will play No. 6 seed Arkansas Baptist (29-27) at noon, followed by No. 3 seed Seminole State (35-17) against No. 4 seed Eastern State (26-26) at 3:30 p.m.
The Connors/Rose State winner will play at 7 p.m. Friday against the Seminole/ Eastern winner and the loser at noon.
The All-Region II Baseball team was announced and three Cowboys were selected and three received Gold Glove awards.
Named All-Region were infielder Yariel Gonzalez, pitcher Landon Bradley and catcher Jarrard Poteete. Gold Glove winners were Josh Hammill, Jake Borrego and Yariel Gonzalez.
Gonzalez , sophomore from San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, is the NJCAA’s No. 3 hitter in the nation with a .455 batting average and ranks No. 7 in runs-batted-in with 66. Gonzalez has also blasted 10 home runs to lead the Cowboys in that department and has a slugging percentage of .673.
Poteete, sophomore from Muskgoee, transferred to Connors from Texas Tech where he was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, is hitting .386 for the Cowboys and is No. 44 on the NJCAA RBI chart with 51. He has 4 home runs and 14 doubles.
Bradley, freshman from Smackover, Ark., has a 10-0 record on the mound, with an earned run average of 1.40to ranked 12th among NJCAA pitchers. He is No. 5 on the NJCAA win-loss mark, while striking out 57, walking 14 in 77 1/3 innings on the hill.
Hammill, sophomore from Inola, has an 8-2 record on the mound, striking out 71, walking 22, while posting an ERA of 2.50 in 72 innings on the hill. He ranks No. 25 among NJCAA pitchers in wins.
