WARNER---It was fast and furious at Melvin Self Field House Monday night as Connors State and Eastern State had to go overtime to decide the winner in the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference clash
In the end the host Cowboys outlasted the visiting Mountaineers 122-114 to remain unbeaten at 10-0 overall and 2-0 in league play. Eastern State is now 1-9 and 0-1.
It was a game of little defense, as the Cowboys established a new single game scoring record, eclipsing the 1994 mark of 121 against Bacone College.
"We just didn't guard tonight," said Coach Bill Muse. "We didn't guard them and they shot the ball extremely well (16 treys).
"We were lucky to get it to overtime. They played very hard. But we played well the last five minutes of the game."
It was those five minutes that the Cowboys trailed Eastern 100-86 when they made their comeback, going on a 35-6 run, including the overtime.
Cowboys behind Daylon Tanksley and Callen Hadon, who scored 25 points each, sent the game into overtime. Haydon deadlock the game with 20 ticks on the clock at 109.
In the final 20 seconds Eastern turnover the ball over with 16 seconds remaining and a loose ball ensued on the next possession with CSC getting the ball with 2.1 seconds remaining.
A pass to Caleb Riggs on the right wing who went for the game winning shot was blocked with one-second left to send it to overtime.
In the five-minute session Connors scored eight answered points for a 117-109 advantage on buckets by Haydon, Tanksley and Jordon Graham, who finished with 21 points.
Connors tightened its defense in the overtime and held the Mountaineers to just four points.
It was Graham's bucket in the final 20 seconds of the OT that established the scoring mark.
"We finally made a few stops and they missed some shots in the end. But the first 40 minutes was ridiculous. We can play much better defense than we showed.
"Offensively we played well," said Muse.
Connors will next return to the court on Dec. 2nd to play Central Baptist College JV at Warner.
