WARNER—Vicky Dru and Aniya Webster scored 18 and 17 points respectively in leading the Connors State Cowgirls to an impressive opening season victory over Southwestern Christian College 73-51 at Melvin Self Field House Friday.
The Cowgirls went on a 15-1 run last half of the first quarter and early in the second to take command of the contest.
Connors led 37-22 at the half and increased its lead to 25 points, largest of the night 71-46 with 5:10 remaining in the game.
Cowgirls return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when they play host to Coffeyville Community at Melvin Self Field House.
Cowgirls coach Jamie Fisher was extremely happy with the play of Dru and Webster in their first game in a Connors uniform.
"Dru and Webster played very well tonight," said Fisher. "You could see that we are a very young team. We struggled early (missed their first eight shots from the field) but as the game went on we settled down.
"We are still trying to find our way. We are extremely athletic, and we will have turnovers, based on our athleticism and defense.
"We were trying to do a few things tonight to get ready for a big game on Saturday with Coffeyville.
"This was a good starter game for us to bust out, "said Fisher.
