Cowgirls Fall to Seminole in Season Finale, 54-51


WARNER— Connors State had missed opportunities in the final quarter as visiting Seminole State broke away in the final 30 seconds to capture a 54-51 victory Thursday night to spoil the Cowgirls Sophomore Night in the season finale.

Cowgirls conclude the regular season at 14-15 and 6-10 in Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Seminole will enter next week's Region II Tournament at Shawnee with a 17-10 mark on the year and 9-7 in league play.

Cowgirls will enter the Region II Tournament  on Monday in a play-in game at Melvin Self Field House against Arkansas Baptist. Tip-off is set for 6

p.m. A Cowgirls win Monday will advance them into the Region II Quarterfinals on Thursday.

"They (Seminole) made some good plays at the end and we just had some bad possessions," said Coach Jamie Fisher. "We had a couple of breakdowns defensively. They are a good team, finishing third.

"We just have to gather ourselves and play Monday night. We aren't out of this yet," said Fisher.

Cowgirls held a one-point advantage 48-47 with 1:14 remaining. However, the Belles regained the lead 49-48 on a pair of free throws by Jamie Clarke. It was a lead they never relinquished. Seminole added four more points to the Cowgirls three, a trey by Laurie Wright made it 52-51 Belles.

Then with six-tenths remaining Seminole drained two free throws to ice the game.

Cowgirls battled back from a 13-point deficit to capture a two-point lead at the half, 32-30, behind Shaniqua Patterson.

The sophomore scored nine points in the second quarter to lead the comeback for Connors.

Defensively the Cowgirls held the Belles to seven points in the second period after the visitors held a 23-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Vicky Duru and Patterson each scored 17 to lead the Cowgirls with Victoria Vickers pacing the Belles with 13 points.
