CAMDEN, Ark. –Behind the post play of Chalynn Mayes and De'Asia Reid the Connors State Cowgirls rolled to a 66-55 victory over Coahoma (Miss.) Community College Saturday in the Southern Arkansas University Classic.
Cowgirls (2-0) now look toward its home opener Monday against Oklahoma Wesleyan University Junior Varsity. Tip-off at Melvin Self Field House is 5:30 p.m.
Mayes led the Cowgirls scoring with 16 points with Reid scoring 15 with both dominating on the boards.
"Mayes played well in the second and third quarter and Reid in the fourth, that was the difference," said Cowgirls Coach Jamie Fisher.
"We didn't shoot the ball well though. We had a lot of open looks and the ball just wasn't falling."
Leading by 16 at the end of the first half 36-20, the Tigers came out with a roar in the second half battling back to a deadlock with Connors at 49-all early in the fourth quarter.
Coahoma then scored four unanswered points to take their first lead of the game 53-49 since leading 2-0 on the opening play of the game.
"We lost our focus and intensity in the third quarter to let them get back into the game," said Fisher. "We put them at the free throw way too much.
"But we woke up and got on a run and started to do the little things right to get the victory."
Connors with 5:22 remaining in the game scored eight unanswered points on two buckets, pair of free throws by Reid and a pair of free throws by Jasmyn Taylor to grab a 57-53 lead.
Coahoma was never able to recover as the Cowgirls outscored the Tigers 8-2 in the final two minutes to get the win.
