Cowgirls Pound Oklahoma Wesleyan JV 89-58 in Home Opener

WARNER—Connors State Cowgirls used a third quarter blitz and the double-figure scoring of sophomore transfer  De'Asia Reid and freshman Isabel Gonzalez to rout Oklahoma Wesleyan University Junior Varsity 89-58 in the Cowgirls'  home opener Monday night at Melvin Self Field House.

The Cowgirls (3-0) return to play Thursday night when they hit the road to Little Rock, Ark., to play Arkansas Baptist University.

Cowgirls held a nine-point lead at the half, 44-35 behind Reid's 14 points. She was 9-of- 10 at the free throw line.

"We played a little passive in the first half defensively," said Coach Jamie Fisher. "With all the travel we've had we were a little flat to open the game.

"But we responded in the second half and played much better basketball."

Connors blew open the game in the third period outscoring the Eagles 27-11 to cruise to a 69-46 advantage.

Cowgirls opened the third quarter with a 10-2 barrage for a 54-37 lead. Following two Wesleyan buckets to make it a 54-42 lead, Cowgirls outscored the Eagles 12-0 for a 67-42 advantage with 59 seconds left and a 25-point advantage.

Connors held a 31-point lead 80-49 with 6:50 remaining, its largest lead of the game until the final outcome.

Reid finished with 19 points to lead the Connors attack. "D (Reid) is a very good player and we are fortunate to have her," said Fisher.

Gonzalez poured in 15 points in the win to follow in the scoring with Caylin Livers, Tatum Jones, Lauren Wright and Chalynn Mayes each contributing eight points.

Fisher said it has been the Cowgirls inside game in the early going that has carried them to a 3-0 mark thus far.

"We said from day one our inside game has been a factor for us. "It has been our strength. It shows in our numbers game-in-and-game-out."

The Cowgirls lost a key player one-minute into the game when starting forward Jasmyn Taylor, freshman from Cedar Park, Texas, went down with an apparent ankle injury.   Her status for the Arkansas Baptist game is unknown.
