Muskogee, OK- It will be Championship Saturday for both the Connors State Cowboys and Cowgirls as they battle for the title in this year's National Junior College Athletic Association Region II tournament at Muskogee's Rougher Village arena.
Sophomore standout Bradyn Hubbard showed why he was named the Region II Player of the Year as he powered his way to two old-fashioned three-point plays in the final four minutes to help push the Cowboys to an 82-73 win over Eastern in a game that was much closer than the score might indicate.
Connors battled foul trouble with big man Buddy Hammer on the bench with four fouls much of the second half and it was a night where the long-range shots just weren't falling for the Cowboys. As a result, Eastern took a 56-53 lead with 14 minutes to play. The Cowboys kept battling, finally tying the score at 68-all with six minutes left.
"The first half got away from us a little bit, but I thought we played better defense in the second half," said head coach Bill Muse. "We didn't make shots or rebound like we did on Thursday and had foul trouble, but we were tough down the stretch."
Hubbard led all scorers with 34 points, taking up a legacy of top performers for the Cowboys according to Muse.
Besides Hubbard, Tony Green and May also scored in double figures with 13 and 16 points respectively.
