Cowboys Pull Away in Second Half against Murray State
After a nip-and-tuck first half, the Connors State Cowboys poured in 60 second half points to roll to a 94-78 win over the Murray State Aggies Thursday night at Melvin Self Fieldhouse to notch their 23rd win of the season against just two losses.
"I give them (Murray State) credit for a good game plan. They were physical and hung with us the first half by double teaming (Bradyn) Hubbard and (Buddy) Hammer. But I think in the second half we played a lot better offensively. We spread the floor better and read the double teams a little better and we continued to shoot free throws well," said Cowboy head coach Bill Muse.
Neither team led by more than four points until the 15-minute mark left in the game when the Cowboys broke things open and got the Aggies in foul trouble. After being held to just six points in the first half, Hubbard broke loose for 24 second-half points to lead all scorers with 30 and Hammer, who had just four points at intermission, ended up with 24 for the game. Donyae May connected on a pair of treys at crucial points in the second half and finished with 12 points while Khamani Cooper added 10 points. Connors went to the charity line 26 times in the second half and cashed in on 22 of those with Hammer going 14-of-15. Murray State (11-13, 6-4 OCAC) was led by Isaiah Lewis with 18 points.
After a hectic last three weeks, Connors will have a few days off until their next action next Thursday at Northern Oklahoma College- Tonkawa.
